Problems with Appleworks: need a replacement for the spreadsheet application

Appleworks 6.2.9.running on a Power PC G5 under OSX 10.4.9 has developed problems. In spreadsheet application, changing any text in header causes Appleworks to quit. Restarting, deleting pref. files doesn’t fix. Any suggestions for cure? Any suggestions for replacement? We would prefer something low power rather then high power, such as XL.
