Sr. OS X/Unix Systems Administrator needed in Oakland

My client is looking for an experienced Senior Unix Systems Administrator that is seeking a challenging, fast paced environment in an early stage, revenue generating, cutting edge technology company! In this key role, the Sr. System Administrator will help guide and support the company’s rapidly growing online community by implementing and supporting world class infrastructure.

In this position, you will be responsible for all levels of support, which includes troubleshooting uncommon issues, installing, configuring and maintaining all systems related to our service. In addition, you will perform capacity planning, upgrades for Mac OS X Server and installing, configuring and maintaining all application systems related to the service.

You will also be responsible for taking the lead role in investigating appropriate technologies to support our growth as well as architecting new solutions to improve on line reliability and performance. The majority of our current systems are OS X Xserve servers and the applications running on those servers are a mix of standard software packages as well as internally developed applications.

    Responsibilities:

  • Administer and maintain all applications systems related to company’s online services.
  • Support medium to large scale web application deployment and maintenance and ensure network security issues.
  • Provide second-tier on call support for production services.
  • Identify, troubleshoot and resolve production issues quickly and effectively under pressure.
  • Develop tools and scripts to facilitate improvement and support ongoing maintenance.
  • Identify, define and write clear and concise technical documentation related to systems and applications.
  • Install and setup systems as required to support growth.
  • Work well in a team environment and be able to work with and provide feedback of technical information to developers to identify and resolve issues.
  • Provide recommendations for scalability and performance improvement.
  • Work independently on new projects, completing them on time.
  • Service monitoring and capacity planning
  • Writing the company tools as needed (e.g. task automation, data migration, custom monitoring)
  • 24 x 7 on call status to handle internal support issues
  • Stay up to date on current directions of relevant technologies.
  • Support medium to large scale web application deployment and maintenance and ensure network security issues

      Qualifications:

  • Technical BS/MS degree
  • 5+ years in UNIX system administration in a large scale production environment (at least 50+ servers)
  • Successfully managed outside contractors/consultants
  • Is a hands on contributor with a “get it done” attitude
  • Strong background in OSX/BSD, Solaris and networking
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and written.
  • Experience with load balancing - (DNS, Citrix Netscalers, Foundry ServerIrons, etc)
  • Experience with NetApp, EMC, SANs, NAS, or other storage systems XServe-RAID/Fiber Channel
  • UNIX shell scripting, python/perl experience required
  • Command line administration
  • Experience setting up and using Nagios or BigBrother, Cacti, Cricket or other RRD-based reporting tool
  • Strong experience writing, documenting and maintaining custom scripts
  • Strong understanding of networking: HTTP, HTTPS, OSI layer and higher.
  • Familiarity with LDAP in general

      Nice to have, but not required:

  • Familiarity and usage of the following tools: Apache, postfix, ssh, Perl, tcpdump, WebObjects and Java
  • Asterisk PBX Telephony solution experience
  • PC/Desktop support a plus
