New 10.5.6 system update is out today.

Important: our next meeting will be on January 12, rather than January 19. The push of one week ahead is so that a special vendor can present at the meeting.

Apple Retail Store is open on Rosenstrasse in Munich (München). There is a Quicktime surround shot of the opening.

Apple updated the MacBook and MacBook Pro (15 inch)

Charles showed a original portable Macintosh, from twenty years ago. Twenty pounds including the lead-acid motorcycle battery that powers it. And a brilliant 5 inch monochrome (green) screen!

News and Events

Microsoft promotional campaign for Vista seems to have fallen on deaf ears. Microsoft executives are noting that MS Office for Mac has less functional compared to the blessed MS Office on Windows.

There is also talk of the “Apple Tax” from Ballmer. This is supposably in reference to the claims that Macintosh is overpriced. Furthermore, Macs do not come in multiple colors — and PC’s do! Plus your available applications are limited. And cost comparison charts “prove” that Macs are twice as expensive. That includes $1000 in software costs.

MacWorld Expo registration is now open. Register early, with our discount code TLC11938

This offers free exhibit access, and 15% off for the conference packages. It is valid until December 1st, but do not delay.

MacWorld host IDG is also sending out their “alumni” discounts.

The expo is January 6-9, 2009. User group reception is on Monday afternoon, for a fee of $20 ($10 discounted). This is a separate registration from the expo. You will sign up using Acteva.

There may be a user group breakfast.

Bloomberg updated their file obit for Steve Jobs, and then accidentally posted it to their news feed! oops. Steve is annoyed at all the rumors about his health. He views this as a private matter. On the record - none of your business. Off the record - he is fine.

New people - new lady prefers the evening meetings

Lynda and Charles are getting married on the weekend following our September meeting. So we are planning a potluck dinner meeting to celebrate. There is a sign up sheet for things to bring. The cake is already provided for, and we also are set with plates and such. There is a wedding card for us to sign. We also are soliciting donations for a wedding gift. The happy couple is registered at Amazon.com and Bed, Bath and Beyond.

iPhone 3G One attendee has it. Issues with Voicemail. Issues with AT&T culture.

“Twice as fast. Half the price.” - AT&T monthly fees went up.

Charles claims iPhone 3G can be got with older 2.5G dataplan.

New 3G dataplans don’t include 200 SMS messages anymore. 200 SMS is now $5.

Disappointment with customers having to wait in line for iPhone 3G at Apple Stores.

Disassembles claim new phone is cheaper to make than old one. iPhone OS 2.0

News and Events (and Rumors)

The World Wide Developers Conference was last week. (AKA “The World Wide iPhone Developers Conference”. The number of sessions were increased, as was attendance. The Keynote is available via iTunes.

Snow Leopard was announced.

iPhone 3G: “twice as fast” and “half the cost” (up front - but with the data plan going from $60 per month to $70 per month, you pay an extra $240 over a two year contract). GPS chip has been added. The contract is transferable from older phones.

new iPhone rumors… 3G, GPS, The retail channel seems to be drying up, maybe in preparation for the new model.

AT&T told employees not to take vacation between June and July, in preparation for a new product announcement.

WWWDC is in three weeks… sold out! 4000 to 5000 pre-registered attendees.

It may be that conference recordings will be available for purchase via the iTunes store, following the close of the conference.

Host: Charles Gousha We are in the Beatles Room tonight. In the future, we will be using the Garage Rooms. The Town Hall room is now into the future restricted to Apple corporate events.

First timers: visitor from DVMUG. DVMUG is also concerned about the aging of the membership, and they are having to rethink their annual dues of $35 which pays for meetings and printed newsletter, and office space and internet connection.

We have a handout explaining the process for member presentations.

New People: — one person, not a Mac user, here just to see what it is about. — another came from Monte Vista High School.

— CompUSA branded stuff is at Micro Center, at 50% off. Mostly CDR and DVD-R, cables, and such. A separate room in the far left corner of the store is devoted to Mac gear and books.

— Apple Airport Express with 802.11n is now available.

— HP printers on wireless networks seem to be problematic for some users, though two members spoke up to say it works perfectly.

Rumors are about that Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac has “production” problems, that is the actual product media can not be processed fast enough. Perhaps disk serialization - DRM problems? Underestimated demand. People who are using it are saying it is a good product — works well. It does have a completely different UI on the Mac compared to the PC, and the Mac UI is said to be much better.

Is Office 2008 better than 2004? No worst, says the user.

At MacWorld Expo, there was an arrest of a person who set up a malicious forgery of the official WiFi network. It was a peer-to-peer.

I attended one meeting at the Apple Campus. I really enjoyed your group. When I finally found the website to look up when you meet next, it took me a very long time to find that the next meeting is scheduled for January 21st, Martin Luther King Day. I’ll be there, but I thought someone might want to still put that up there. Gonna try to go to MacWorld tomorrow… I know it’ll be tough, but tomorrow is probably the bets day for me to go.

Tripping to SF... from Italy

Hello to everybody from Italy! Next friday i’ll flight for about 16 hrs to reach SF, could anybody halp me to manage a trip to Cupertino, I would love to see the Company Store but it seems that there is no functional connection, just a 3hrs trip with 3 busses .
